Capitol Trading Company is a family-run cocoa trading business in Sierra Leone. Following the civil that ended in 2002, the company played a major role in reviving the cocoa sector and is now listed as one of the top three cocoa exporters in the country. In 2013 Capitol became the first company assisted by the European Union to move to organic certification.
Capitol Trading exports organic and UTZ-certified cocoa, mainly to the Netherlands. The company sources its cocoa from small-scale farmers, and all of them are ‘organic by default’, as they don't use any synthetic input.
Capitol Trading provides technical assistance and training on more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices, and provides farmers with harvesting equipment.
