Giga Rhino is the Netherlands’ largest utility scale battery, amounting to 12 MW of capacity. The project was originally developed by GIGA Storage company, in cooperation with the Japanese NEC Group and the Neushoorntocht wind farm of Wageningen University. Given the strategic and innovative importance of the project, GIGA received support from the Dutch government, which provided a Duurzame Energie Innovatie subsidy. Construction of the project was completed in early November 2020, when the project was connected to the grid. The GIGA Rhino battery helps to improve the electricity system’s flexibility and stability, preventing nearby wind farms and renewable plants from being curtailed when too much energy is being generated, and reduce the need for additional capacity to be added to the system, as the battery plants can store energy produced by existing facilities.
