RENOVA is an independent renewable energy developer and power producer. The company is the fifth-largest independent power producer (IPP) for renewable energy in Japan and owns and operates 11 solar parks and one biomass plant. In May 2020, the company announced its first overseas project, an onshore wind park in Vietnam. The company plans to pursue further diversification into onshore and offshore wind parks and geothermal power plants that are currently under development. By the end of 2020, power generating capacity in operation was 311.4 MW, with another 780 MW under construction or in development. The long-term target of RENOVA is to realize a generation capacity of at least 3 GW. The company was founded in 2000 by the current CEO Mr. Kiminami as an environmental consulting business and got involved in plastic recycling and renewable energy. In 2016, the company sold the plastic recycling business to fully focus on renewable energy, before getting listed on the Tokyo stock market in 2017. RENOVA has 230 employees and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Investment rationale

RENOVA plays an important role in the energy transition in Japan. The company is switching from fossil fuels to renewable sources to generate electricity.

When, around 2025, all current power plant projects of RENOVA are completed and in operation the total CO2 emissions reduction will be almost 3.5 million ton per year. For 2030 the company targets an annual CO2 emission reduction of 10 million tons.

By 2025, RENOVA will generate over 3 billion kWh green electricity per year. This is equivalent to the electricity use of over 1.6 million households or 2.8% of the total number of households in Japan.

RENOVA is actively looking to promote renewable energy power plants in emerging countries in Southeast Asia.
