Their answer to the question is a clear yes. Positive impact is certainly not limited to start-ups, says Dirk Schoenmaker: "We need the large companies, the scalability for the sustainable transformation to succeed. Provided, of course, that they are willing to transform."
Both acknowledge, however, that there are some headwinds that impact investors on public markets have to deal with. "Proving the impact you make is still an issue, but through smart engagement and more and better data becoming available, we have made huge progress in this regard", explains William de Vries. "But we also have to accept that we cannot quantify everything."
Ultimately, whether we invest on public or private markets, we must step away from the current shareholder capitalism that focuses on short-term financial return and develop a stakeholder model that also takes the broader interests of our environment and society into account, concludes Dirk Schoenmaker.
