Icecreek Energy is a German developer of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), founded in 2024. The company aims to develop and build portfolios of BESS projects on the medium-voltage distribution network across Europe. Due to an increasing level of supply of renewable energy to European energy markets, electricity grids across Europe are in need for more flexibility and resilience. This dynamic environment offers strong opportunities for early movers who can deploy BESS and tap into multiple markets and revenue streams.
“We see a massive opportunity to deploy capital at scale in BESS infrastructure across Europe over the next years, providing attractive returns to our investors and at the same time supporting the transition to a carbon-free electricity grid which also becomes more resilient through the integration of battery technology. We are excited to have a strong group of partners at our side that share our vision”, commented Fabian Siegel, Managing Partner at Icecreek Energy.
Voltfang, a German pioneer in the circular use of batteries, will provide repurposed electric vehicle battery modules for the two projects. This will prevent valuable materials from going to waste and ensures that the projects support not only the energy transition but also the resource transition. Once operational, the projects will be among Europe’s first grid-scale BESS projects powered by repurposed electric vehicle cells.
“At Voltfang, we are building BESS as a platform. We are bringing together relevant stakeholders to make the energy transition happen now”, adds Voltfang CEO and co-founder David Oudsandji. “The projects we are executing together with Icecreek Energy highlight our partner-led approach to maximise the BESS capacity throughout Germany”
Entrix, an energy trader and market leader for trading flexible energy systems in Europe, has been selected to provide the trading and optimisation services to the two projects. The company will use their AI-based optimisation solution to support the project in maximising their revenues by participating across all relevant revenue markets.
“The successful integration of battery storage into the energy system depends on intelligent trading and optimization. With our AI-based solution, we ensure that the Alsdorf and Vordorf projects can unlock their full potential – delivering strong economic value for investors while at the same time supporting the energy transition. We are excited to work alongside Icecreek, Voltfang and Triodos Energy Transition Europe Fund on this project and to be setting a new benchmark for system flexibility”, says Steffen Schülzchen, CEO and founder of Entrix.
Providing additional flexibility to the electricity grid is essential to support the energy transition. Following this entry into the German BESS market, Triodos Energy Transition Europe Fund has investments in BESS projects in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Ireland, which aligns with the fund’s strategy to be at the forefront of the energy and resource transition across Europe.
“We are proud to be partnering with Icecreek Energy, Voltfang and Entrix to deliver one of the first grid-scale BESS projects powered by repurposed electric vehicle cells in Europe”, says Sonja de Ruiter, Fund Manager of Triodos Energy Transition Europe Fund,. “This deal is fully aligned with the fund’s ambitions: it accelerates portfolio diversification, offers attractive risk-adjusted returns, and delivers significant impact by supporting innovative projects across both the energy and resource transitions that allow the development of a reliable zero-emission energy system.”
