ASA Microfinance Tanzania Limited (ASA Tanzania) began operations in 2014 with the vision to build just and financially inclusive societies. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of ASA International Group, one of the world’s largest international microfinance networks and active in thirteen countries in Asia and Africa. ASA Tanzania focuses on reducing poverty and supporting female entrepreneurs through an efficient group lending model. As of June 2025, the company served more than 300,000 active borrowers, 97% of whom are women, across more than 200 branches.
ASA Tanzania offers two main loan products:
- Small group loans: For women in groups of up to 30, supporting micro-entrepreneurs with loans ranging from around USD 500 to USD 1,000.
- Small enterprise loans: For both men and women, aimed at small businesses, with loan sizes from around USD 600 to USD 5,000.
The group lending approach combines individual accountability with social support, fostering financial discipline and business growth. Loan decisions are based on business assessment and regular group meetings, with safeguards in place to prevent over-indebtedness. ASA Tanzania also provides insurance and organises financial literacy training and workshops for its clients.
The institution adheres to responsible pricing and transparency standards, aligning with international best practices, including the SMART Campaign’s Client Protection Principles.
Looking ahead, ASA Tanzania is preparing to introduce digital financial services, further expanding its reach and support for entrepreneurs, as part of its digital transformation process. The USD 5 million loan by Triodos Microfinance Fund and Triodos Fair Share Fund will enable ASA Tanzania to further expand its outreach.
