Founded in France in 1865, Legrand now operates in more than 90 countries and is a global leader in electrical and digital building infrastructure. The company offers a portfolio of more than 300,000 products used across  the spaces where people live and work. From homes and offices to hospitals and data centres, millions of people use Legrand’s solutions every day, whether switching on a light, charging a device or managing a smart building system.

The company’s solutions help distribute electricity safely and efficiently, organise and protect cables, and support smart controls for lighting, security and energy management. Legrand has also become an important player in the fast-growing data centre market, a segment expanding quickly as digitalisation, cloud computing and AI continue to grow. It supplies hardware that helps this digital infrastructure run more energy-efficiently.

Growth driven by global trends

Legrand holds leading market positions in Europe and North America, and continues to expand in fast-growing regions such as Brazil, China, India and the Middle East. This growth is supported by urbanisation and rising demand for modern electrical infrastructure.

Its strong market position is underpinned by several long-term trends:

  • digitalisation and the growth of smart buildings
  • demand for greater energy efficiency in homes and industries
  • urbanisation and the need for modern infrastructure
  • expansion of data centres, driven by AI and cloud computing

With a strong focus on innovation, particularly in energy management and integrated systems, Legrand is well-positioned to benefit from these developments.

Important contribution to energy transition

Close to 70% of Legrand’s revenue supports the shift towards a low-carbon economy through smart, efficient solutions that reduce energy waste.

For example, its smart thermostats help optimise heating in older buildings and can reduce residential energy use by 7%. Its occupancy detectors help avoid unnecessary energy use by adjusting lighting and climate systems only when spaces are in use.

Looking ahead, Legrand’s EV charging stations support cleaner and more efficient mobility. It classifies the charging stations as EU Taxonomy-aligned, which means they meet the EU’s strict, science-based criteria for environmental sustainability and contribute to climate and environmental goals without harming other objectives.

By enabling real-time management and optimisation of energy consumption, Legrand’s solutions can reduce a building’s energy use by up to 30%, according to industry benchmarks and company reports. This focus on energy efficiency helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and supports customers in meeting the highest regulatory and sustainability standards.

GHG emissions and waste

For its own operations, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste are the most tangible sustainability topics. Legrand has set ambitious, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-approved targets to reduce its Scope 1-3 CO emissions – aligned with the 1.5°C climate agreement – and is on track to meet them

The company has cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by increasing renewable energy sourcing and implementing energy efficiency measures. Meanwhile, Scope 3 emissions have been reduced through supplier engagment. Additionally, Legrand aims to avoid 70 million tonnes of CO
emissions between 2020 and 2030 via its products (Scope 4).

The electrical equipment sector faces significant waste management risks. Legrand demonstrates a strong commitment to circular economy principles by optimising production, processes, enhancing product repairability and recyclability, and extending product lifespans.

While only 16% of its waste goes to incineration or landfill – and hazardous waste remains stable at 5% – its performance is average compared to peers. However, Legrand leads in minimising non-recycled waste.

Our key engagement topics with Legrand therefore include establishing clearer waste reduction targets, improving hazardous waste management and increasing transparency on product lifecycle initiatives.

Legrand aligns with our Energy Transition theme and contributes to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

The company is part of the Triodos Global Equities Impact portfolio and the Triodos Impact Mixed portfolios.
