Bright Horizons is a global provider of childcare and early education, back-up care, and workplace education services. The company operates approximately 1,000 childcare centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and India, and serves more than 1,300 of the world’s leading organizations. The childcare centers are mainly located in the US (65%) and UK (30%), with the Netherlands being a smaller part of the footprint (5%). Most of the company's services are performed at the site of the customer, with the customer being a company that provides on-site childcare to its employees.

The company employs close to 27,000 people and was founded in 1987.

Investment rationale

Bright Horizon creates positive impact by stimulating the development of young children. High-quality childcare is associated with positive impact on social and emotional development of children. It also positively affects cognitive abilities and school readiness.
The company also plays a role in reducing the gender gap in labour force participation. An International Labourt Organisation study finds that lack of affordable childcare is one the two key reasons for women not being part of the labour force (the other one is being married/having a partner). So, childcare is a clear enabler for women to join the workforce, and thus enhancing equality between man and women. A study by the company itself also found that female managers believed that the availability of childcare enabled them to pursue or accept a higher position.
