Microfinance institution HUMO in Tajikistan has a strong focus on providing financial services to small businesses in rural areas. From their head office in the capital Dushanbe, HUMO's loan officers visit the village communities in the surrounding districts.
The poor infrastructure and the fragile agricultural climate (only 7% of the land is suitable for arable farming) are the biggest challenges for the development of a rural enterprise. HUMO is also active in cities where it provides individual loans to businesses in the retail, manufacturing, and service sectors.
