The company operates through 5 divisions: Assessment & Qualifications is the largest division with just over one third of revenues, and provides assessments, qualifications, certifications and licenses that enable people to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and aptitude in academic and professional settings. Founded in 1844 in England as a construction business, it switched to publishing in the 1920s. It was once the largest book publisher in the world but in 2015 it changed its focus to education exclusively.
