Red Eléctrica is a Spanish electricity transmission monopoly, for 20% owned by the Spanish government. Electricity transmission and system operation in Spain make up for 92% of the company's revenues. The company is headquartered in Madrid and has 1,700 employees.

Investment rationale

The main impact of Red Eléctrica (REE) is through connectivity (connecting more people to the grid) and doing so in a manner that is respectful to the environment. As a backbone infrastructure provider, REE has been issuing green bonds since 2019. The company aims to be an active agent in contributing to the achievement of the SDGs and strengthen its commitment to renewable energy and clean transportation. REE aims at projects directly increasing production of renewable energy (e.g. interconnection, grid integration, decarbonisation projects) and those that integrate renewable energy (e.g. grid investments to enhance transmission capacity).

As for clean transportation, REE aims to improve the efficiency of the rail system. Proposed investments include high speed rail lines and electrical connections in order to achieve higher energy efficiency, carbon emission reductions, air quality improvements and a shift to rail for long distance transport.
