Sprouts Farmers Market (Sprouts) operates a chain of specialty retail grocery stores in the United States, focusing on health and wellness. The company offers a broad assortment of fresh and natural products including produce, meat, seafood, dairy, bakery, bulk foods, vitamins and supplements.

Rather than as a conventional supermarket, Sprouts positions itself as a differentiated specialty grocer. Its stores are set up as a farmers market, with open, produce-centric layouts in a smaller footprint and a curated assortment emphasizing organic and better-for-you products. More than half of the produce is sourced from a network of local organic farmers across its operating regions.

Founded in 2002, the company operates 477 stores, employs approximately 36,000 people.

Investment rationale

Agriculture accounts for a substantial share of global biodiversity loss, freshwater use and greenhouse gas emissions. Retailers sit at a decisive point in that system, since what a grocer stocks, and at what price, influences what farmers plant and how they farm.

Sprouts uses that position deliberately. Organic is the foundation of its assortment and a rising share of what customers buy, with produce at the centre of the store and more than half of it sourced from organic growers. A meaningful share comes from local farms, shortening supply chains and building direct relationships with growers working to organic and increasingly regenerative standards.

The same logic runs through the wider store, from non-GMO verified and Fair-Trade certified products to a substantial plant-based assortment and a responsible sourcing policy applied across categories. Accessibility is central: Sprouts prices organic produce below conventional grocers, making the more sustainable choice the affordable one and broadening who can eat well. Unsold but edible food is donated to local partners, redirected as animal feed or composted, diverting most of the waste from landfill.
